Local Law Enforcement
Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident made him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
