Tutoring a Baby to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Money?

Child education concept
The company responsible for the advertisement states that what appears like "luxury or peculiarity" is actually "intentional commitment in early education".

"A family located in north London seeks an remarkable and experienced tutor to support their most junior child on his initial journey to growing into an English gentleman."

Looking at this listing, you might naturally overlook the wording "beginning" as just a turn of phrase.

However, it might be the most significant element of this unique job advert, as it aims to hire a teacher for a infant.

Hundreds of responses have already been sent in since the unidentified family published their search for the £180,000 per year tutor, who has to be "a uniquely qualified person".

During the past few weeks, the advert has gained notice throughout the news, with several asking why?

Forward-Thinking Method

The CEO, chief executive of Tutors International, which is helping the family in their quest, explained that notwithstanding initial doubt, he considered the concept "visionary", and "innovative".

When he spoke with the family, he mentioned they recognized the atypical aspect of their demand, and how young their son is.

But, they explained that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had held off until their older child was five, and by that age "cultural bias had already taken hold".

What precisely did the family refer to by "cultural bias"?

It's "everything", the expert replied. "How you eat, the manner you speak".

He said the older sibling had picked up "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had assumed their cultural norms. The family explained to Adam they hoped to prevent this pattern to recur with their new baby.

The intention: To bring in a English tutor, who needs to speak with Received Pronunciation, to influence the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm state the listing has started a broader conversation about how families perceive schooling, elitism and the part of family background in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"Much of the development at the beginning here is somewhat absorbed naturally," said the CEO.

It's through this natural absorption that the family are aiming the child will acquire the English characteristics they wish to impart.

He explained the tutor must be an individual who went to "the appropriate educational institutions – the same kinds of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The educator must be the suitable individual, they'll be doing things they may not realize they're doing, just naturally," he commented.

Cost Not Relevant

The family told Adam the chosen tutor should ideally also have knowledge of or passion in riding, skiing, creative fields and music so as to shape the child in a wide range of hobbies.

More than that though, he stated the family desired the tutor to register the child on a selection of lessons so the child would be "pony-riding and learning an musical instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's view, assisting their son develop into a "British gentleman" will result in success and create opportunities.

"Taking into account the rights and wrongs of that, because it's certainly a class statement," he adds.

Yet, notwithstanding all this guidance in "Britishness", might the child absorb so-called cultural leaning from the international family he resides with anyway?

"Absolutely", answered Adam. "They understand this might not succeed, but they've merely embraced the perspective of, 'we should try and we should start as quickly as we can', because the price of it is not a concern," he stated.

Impractical

A number of in the tutoring industry who express those reservations.

Peter Cui, head and founder of Blue Education, who also offer personal educators, stated that "the development of embracing two identities, or in fact, discovering oneself, is something that must be lived into, not designed."

Peter explained that he had moved from China to the United Kingdom at the period of 7 years old, and had been brought up experiencing and embodying both cultures. He went on to learn at Cambridge University.

The executive was the first individual born in the People's Republic of China to be elected to the post of Financial Officer of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The concept that a single person can function as a embodiment of UK identity, a person who can possibly impart the characteristics of a English gentleman onto a 12-month-old child, appears naive and unrealistic," he stated.

"Based on my background, having a quintessentially British tutor from babyhood will does not instantly create the result they want.

"I never had such a figure, and however I have been fortunate enough to enjoy several of the experiences they desire for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, personal identity can not be forced from the outside influences; it must be embraced, and it must come from within."

Purchasing UK Culture

Of course, Britishness is something Adam hopes can be instructed – and sold.

"I think the reality that the global community holds us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
