The Video Platform Grants Users Control to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that allows them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service announced that it currently hosts over 1 billion content made with AI.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a global rollout. This shift aligns with a surge in content created by AI, driven by recent video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that approximately one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service primarily display AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this content is considered “AI slop”, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently nonsensical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that many people enjoy content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the option to increase or decrease of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, in excess of 100 million media items are submitted to the service every day, making AI content a limited portion of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they see by using the content preference setting in the application and choosing “AI-generated content”. Other topics that are already be modified under the tool cover current affairs, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s policies oblige users to identify convincing artificially created content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the service will henceforth attach an AI-generated label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an collaborative effort for spotting artificial media. This measure is intended to stop users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is furthermore introducing a two million dollar awareness program for experts and institutions to produce educational content about using AI responsibly. This program will assist non-profit groups dedicated to teaching computer science.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, following discussion over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is set to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation department in the UK capital, with labor groups and online safety experts raising concerns that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by filtering out the most harmful content before it is viewed by people. The company reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to intervention by its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
