A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
